What is it?

Duke of Edinburgh is a three stage Award. You start at Bronze and move through Silver to Gold.

At each level in the Award you complete four sections:

Service: encouraging service to individuals in the community

Skills: involving discovery and development of interests and social and practical skills

Physical recreation: participating and improving in physical activities and performance

Expedition: fulfil a spirit of adventure and discovery!

The Award aims to provide you with an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of personal development.

It's non-competitive: you work at your own pace, and anyone can take part. You can design your own programme of activities, but completion of the award does require personal commitment, and the requirement of the four sections ensures you particiate in a well balanced range of activities.

Why do it?

Taking part in the Award should give you opportunities to develop:

  • self belief
  • self confidence
  • a sense of identity
  • independence of thought and action
  • a sense of responsibility
  • an awareness of your potential
  • new talents and abilities
  • an understanding of your strengths and weaknesses
  • the ability to plan and use time effectively
  • the ability to learn from others in the community

  • skills including problem solving, presentation and communication
  • the ability to lead and work as part of a team
