The needs of the most able continues to be met
through setting differentiated work and encouragement to participate
in a wide
range of extra curricular activities and extension days.
Our most
able students are able to join the National Academy of Gifted
and Talented students. This provides them with opportunity
to take part in a variety of activities, including summer schools
and activity days. Over the past two years, students have attended
summer schools at the University of Warwick, Leeds, Imperial
College and Christ College Canterbury on subjects ranging from
Creative
writing, Sports Science, Geology and Chemistry. Other students
have attended activity days held in this area on subjects ranging
from Earthquakes to Forensic Science.
Within school, activities
for the more able have included an art extension day at Cressing
Temple, allowing students to extend their
skill in a location that offers a range of interesting subject
for drawing and painting. Science students visited the Science
Museum where they carried out a range of activities during the
day. Our able year nine students have worked on scientific problem
solving in their practical work. This allows them to extend their
investigative and research skills on scientific issues. A number
of students were given a taste of university life when they attended
an open day at Oxford University.
A large number of extra curricular
activities take place in school. They provide an opportunity
for students with particular talents
to develop these beyond the normal classroom situation. Examples
of this include music, drama and sport. The dance displays over
the last two years have shown the high standards and professionalism
reached by our students. The creative arts report provides more
information about the productions and performances that have
taken place. As well as this clubs such as the chess club provide
students
with the opportunity to develop and extend their skills in other
areas.
