All students are members of the school library, and all lower school classes have timetabled lessons in the library to encourage them in its proper use.

Apart from borrowing books, students are encouraged to use the library reference books for class-work, homework and projects.

Using the Library

Opening

The library is normally open from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on school days.

Lending

Lower School students (years 7-9) may borrow two books for a maximum of two weeks. Upper School students (years 10 – 11) may borrow a maximum of four books. Sixth Form students may take out a maximum of six books. Staff may borrow books and also request topic loans for use in class.

Students are responsible for their books and if they are lost or damaged they should inform the Librarian.

Study Skills

Students in year 7 and 8 follow a study skills programme

Year 7

By the end of their first year, students will have an understanding of the way a library works and how to access the information on it. They will understand library terms and confidently use fiction, non ficyion and reference areas in the library. They will have knowledge of the parts of the books and how to use indexes and contents pages to speed up information gathering. They will be expected to use research skills on the Internet and be aware of the safety guidelines for Internet use. Students will use listening and writing skills when reviewing books and writing book reviews.

Year 8

Students in Year 8 will develop their study skills. They will be expected to confidently use an Encyclopedia, a Thesaurus and the Britannica Yearbook. More time will be spent on research skills and reviewing. A large part of the programme will cover note-taking, to prepare students for the increasing demands of Key Stage 3 & 4 subject requirements.

Resources

The telegraph is delivered daily. In addition, the Guardian is delivered on Monday and Tuesday of each week for the Media and Education supplements. The Braintree and Witham Times is delivered on Thursday. New Scientist, Horrible Science and Horrible History and Focus Magazines are also provided.

The library is also available for reference use with computers which are connected both to the internet and to a library of CD Roms. Tutors can and should encourage their students to use the library before and after school, and to treat books properly.
