| All students are members of the school library, and all lower school
classes have timetabled lessons in the library to encourage them
in its proper use.
Apart from borrowing books, students are encouraged to use the
library reference books for class-work, homework and projects.
Using the Library
Opening
The library is normally open from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on school
days.
Lending
Lower School students (years 7-9) may borrow two books for a maximum
of two weeks. Upper School students (years 10 – 11) may borrow
a maximum of four books. Sixth Form students may take out a maximum
of six books. Staff may borrow books and also request topic loans
for use in class.
Students are responsible for their books and if they are lost or
damaged they should inform the Librarian.
Study Skills
Students in year 7 and 8 follow a study skills programme
Year 7
By the end of their first year, students will have an understanding
of the way a library works and how to access the information
on it. They will understand library terms and confidently use fiction,
non ficyion and reference areas in the library. They will have
knowledge of the parts of the books and how to use indexes and
contents pages to speed up information gathering. They will be
expected to use research skills on the Internet and be aware
of
the safety guidelines for Internet use. Students will use listening
and writing skills when reviewing books and writing book reviews.
Year 8
Students in Year 8 will develop their study skills. They will be
expected to confidently use an Encyclopedia, a Thesaurus and the
Britannica Yearbook. More time will be spent on research skills
and reviewing. A large part of the programme will cover note-taking,
to prepare students for the increasing demands of Key Stage 3 & 4
subject requirements.
Resources
The telegraph is delivered daily. In addition, the Guardian is
delivered on Monday and Tuesday of each week for the Media and Education
supplements. The Braintree and Witham Times is delivered on Thursday.
New Scientist, Horrible Science and Horrible History and Focus
Magazines are also provided.
The library is also available for reference use with computers which
are connected both to the internet and to a library of CD Roms. Tutors
can and should encourage their students to use the library before
and after school, and to treat books properly.
