Science is studied throughout a student’s career in the
school. The curriculum consists of a broad range of courses which
help them acquire and build on their science skills and knowledge
through to GCSE and beyond. Each course places emphasis on real-life
settings and increasing use is made of computer technology. Stress
is placed on scientific ways of working and thinking and to this
end all students follow a ‘thinking skills’ programme.
Within the National Curriculum the subject is divided into four
strands:
1. Experimental and investigative Science
2. Life Processes and Living Things. (Biology)
3. Materials and their Properties. (Chemistry)
4. Physical Processes. (Physic)
Experimental and investigative science deals with the intellectual
and physical skills needed to plan and carry out investigative
work and interpret observations arising from it.
Strands 2 – 4 recognise that there is a body of scientific
facts and ideas which need to be understood and subject to recall.
