History

The school's relationship with the community of Witham and the surrounding district began on the 8th September 1937. The accepted tender when the school was built amounted to £23,309. The new idea, at the time, of extending the education of students along with bringing them all together on one site, set in motion a response to the needs of the area, which The John Bramston School is very proud to continue.

Expansion began rapidly in 1971, when the school received its comprehensive intake. Numbers fluctuated considerably during the 1970s and early 1980s, with at one point 1,500 students on roll. Building has kept pace with the needs, and overall the school has excellent facilities on a single campus. Part of the pre-war block was attractively converted to form the Witham Sixth Form Centre, which opened in 1982 to provide post-16 education for all Witham students.

Over the last decade the John Bramston School has continued to thrive. The school’s excellence in examination results was recognised by the DfES in their awarding of two “School Achievement Awards’. The school has also been recognised as an “Investor in people”, has received the Sport England, sportsmark and is a partner school in the University of Cambridge Education Faculty, teacher training programme.
