These examination results are presented in the format
required by the Department for Education and Employment.
GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education)
Grades A, B and C are equivalent to the old 'O' level grades A,
B and C.
The A* grade was introduced in 1994 to denote outstanding attainment.
Grades D, E, F and G are equivalent to the old CSE grades 2, 3,
4 and 5.
Grade U (ungraded) represents a performance below the lowest pass
grade.
A Short Course GCSE is equivalent to half a GCSE.
A pupil of average ability in any subject would be expected to
achieve GCSE grade C or D.
AS Levels (Advanced Supplementary)
These are two year courses equivalent to half an 'A' level.
'A' Levels/VCEs
'A' levels and VCEs are the main examination at 18 plus for students
intending to enter higher education.
Grades A to E are pass grades.
Grade N is not a pass at 'A' level but represents an achievement
which narrowly misses an E grade.
